I know nothing about digital slr cameras. My cousin is all about photography and will be graduating from high school in a few days. The whole family is going to pitch in to buy him a good camera and some good lenses.

We all agree to buy him the D80, but we would like to know which lenses to buy him.

We’ve heard him talk about macro lenses, portrait lenses, and photojournalism lenses. He takes pretty good pictures with his old camera, he actually shot his friend’s sister’s wedding with it and they turned out very nice… kind of professional looking.

Can anyone please suggest which lenses to buy him if he likes those types of photography? (Photojournalism, macro, wedding, portrait) Thank you very much!

Nikon’s D90 is a young entrant. The D80 was known for its quality sensor and was a great mid-range dSLR. The D90 therefore has a lot to prove, especially considering its price.

The D90 we received came along with an 18–105-mm VR lens, with a 6x optical zoom: this kind of range allows one to capture from wide-angles to good telescopic images (for better telescopic images, you should consider the Nikon 18-200 mm lens).

Operating the D90 is pretty straight forward — two jog dials are present — one at the front of the shutter release button and one on the rear near the screen. Accessing them is simple and the feel of the dials is very nice as well, but holding the camera might be a problem for users with smaller hands.

The focus ring on the lens is located on the body instead of the tip of the lens as on some of the other cameras. The camera focuses quickly, even in low-light, and the manual focus is very easy.

The 3-inch screen is exceptionally good and Nikon has implemented Live View in this camera that lets you focus using the screen. The general reaction from professional photographers is that they aren’t really fond of this feature. Another interesting addition to the camera is the HD 720p video recording function. The quality of the video is good; the only drawback here is that of manual focussing.

The D90 together with the AF-S DX 18-105/3.5-5.6G VR lens is priced at Rs. 83,950. It’s a great enthusiast multi-purpose camera, though!

I’m seeing some really good deals on used Nikon D200’s right now because the D300 is out. I’m wondering if that would be a better bet long term than the D40x or D80 for my first Nikon DSLR because of the durability. Any thoughts on whether it would be too advanced for just starting out? Or could I grow into it pretty quickly?

Holding it is as difficult as with the other small dSLRs. The body is close to the hand grip with just enough space for your fingers. However, the build is superior to the Canon EOS 1000D, 400D and the Sony A200.

Images turned out well and the Auto shoot mode does its part nicely. The noise at ISO 1600 is very manageable and is on a par with the EOS 1000D and the 400D. Nikon supplies a good 18–55 mm VR lens, which makes a big difference. The VR works pretty well, but a lens of this calibre doesn’t really need it.
